In all other righthand side driving countries, it's "Drive to the right, overtake on the left with a reasonable difference of speed, unless speed is low and there are queues on both/all lanes. Really wonder why this takes so long in the US. If someone breaks the rules, it's NOT up to the other drivers to teach and discipline him/her. Seeing red lights tells you nothing about what mistake you made. Leave it up to the police. No discussion.

And yet they have less accidents per distance driven, less injuries per distance driven and less fatalities per distance driven on their Autobahns than we have on our Interstate system. In Germany, if you pass on the right and are caught doing it, you lose your driver license for one month (for the FIRST offense). And in Germany, if you stay in the left lane and don't pull into the right lane to let faster traffic overtake you and you are caught doing this, you are arrested for unlawful detainment. It has been my experience that nobody loves banning traveling from the left lane more than people who do the most traveling in the left lane, who think the left lane exists to do warp 9. From a safety standpoint, the left lane is the safest Lane for passing through. If you're going at the speed limit or just about, maybe a little over, being in the left lane should not be a problem. Being in the right lane presents a problem because you have so many people just getting on and also slamming their brakes getting off, and people slamming their brakes because of the people getting on, and some of them immediately jumping left to the center lane to avoid that. The right lane is the greatest danger of collision. The center lane has a slightly less danger level, but is still dangerous because of the people jumping out of the right lane into the center and people jumping from the right and center over to the left, frequently without signaling. There is a reason that when you are boating down a waterway, you do not throw the throttle wide open nearest the shore. Greatest chance of hitting something. Deep water at center channel is where you would find the greatest allowed speed. Somehow, nobody questions that you generally travel away from side towards the center when you're boating on an inland waterway. But you put them on the highway, and they think that left lane, nearest the center of the highway, is there exclusive race track. Everyone else is to blame for being there in front of them. No matter how fast they happen to be going already. And to for ce the majority of the traffic rightward to the center and right lane is to increase the chance of collisions and interactions that put people at high risk of collision. Doing this at a time of increasing population and increasing population on the road, seems a little bit questionable.

So if the traffic is backed up bumper to bumper for miles EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the left lane is getting a ticket? Or do they expect everyone in that lane to somehow merge into stationary traffic?

I bodysurf several times a month... you gotta respect the water... always wear fins, never fight a rip current, just let it take you. I DON'T think you should swim parallel to the beach because some rips at the tail end will turn right or left and you might be unknowingly wasting precious energy....wait till the water calms and your out of the rip and then swim back to shore... problem is you must learn to control your emotions in the water and that only comes with experience...
